GREEN GOOSE -PEARL OF PRL

The cast and crew  of the Green Goose cabaret gave a fantastic performance that kept the audience roaring with laughter and thundering with applause. There wasn’t a soul in the theatre that didn’t enjoy this show.

Although it never won a Tony award, “Green Goose Theatre” is one of the longest running shows and has been enjoyed by many throughout its years.

The director Helena Kaut-Howson , playing the role of Porfioron- theatre director showcased a fantastic understanding of comedic timing. Helena was able to bring out many of the more difficult themes, such as travelling in time and exploring the effects of political pressure on culture, while dancing and sining.

Fafik played by Magda Wlodarczyk showed great versatility as an actress and singer.

Joanna Kanska, who played the free spirited character of Hermenegilda, embodied the character perfectly while singing. Performance by Wojtek Piekarski who played Gzegzolka was an absolute blast to watch as he acted and sang with talent beyond his years. Weteranka portrayed by Renata Chmielewska, stole the show by her unexpected act appearing outside the stage in the middle of the audience seats.

The powerful performance of Janusz Gutner who played the character of professor Baczynski put all politicians in shame. The rap song and the street like aptitude performed by Pawel Zdun who played the character of Majtkowski added even more controversy to the performance, but not in the distracting way .

The carefully prepared “artistic mess”,  projected images and the drawing of the confused goose has been designed by Magdalena Rutkowska and fit in to the show character precisely creating the ” back stage on stage atmosphere”.

Each member of the audience was laughing throughout the show and there wasn’t an unhappy face in the crowd.

Review

‘Crime of the Heart by Beth Henley is a sweltering, sultry and dramatic take on the complicated lives of three white southern sisters in 1970s Mississippi. Ably directed by Gigi Robarts  who manages to keep the pace moving  while allowing for strong characterization and with a striking period set by Magdalena Rutkowska that evokes southern kitchens of the period;  the Tower theatre production succeeds in catching the sometimes zany, often dysfunctional lives of these three very different sisters as they struggle to renew their lives and come to terms with the past of their mother’s suicide and their own always present competitive rivalry. Jo Donnelly(Meg Magrath) , Sarah Peachey(Babe Magrath) and Emma Knott(Lenny Magrath) relish portraying the three Mississippi siblings and give clear performances aided by a strong supporting cast in the shape of Crispin Davy, Oscar Gibbs and Lucy Fletcher. Gigi Robarts has worked hard to ensure the production stays balanced on a fine point between the excesses of southern melodrama and wicked black humour and to keep the sisters’ story central while the play is framed in its historical period. All the appreciative audience at the Bridewell theatre needed was some smooth but fearsome Mississippi Punch to sip on and they’d have been ready for round two.’

Second Skin Theatre’s production of LA CHUNGA opened on Tuesday to a sold-out crowd that included Nobel Prize Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. The playwright brought with him several friends to see the UK premiere production of his 1986 Peruvian drama, a love story between two women, at the atmospheric Phoenix Artist Club in the West End.

Following this memorable opening night, Artistic Director of Second Skin Theatre Andy McQuade was awarded Best Director (Theatre) 2012 by Fringe Report.

Setting up a new theatre can be a perilous thing. But Second Skin’s refurbishment of Ryan’s Bar in Stoke Newington is applauded by a hoard of rosy faces on this, its first official night. What makes it even more special is director Andy McQuade’s willingness to be experimental with his choice, staging Mario Vargas Llosa’s La Chunga – an interwoven play about fantasy and disgust in backwater Peru.

Judith Bliss, former glittering star of the London stage, floats through life taking every small incident as a cue for a big scene. When she and the members of her eccentrically theatrical family all invite a potential romantic entanglement to stay with them without telling the others, the stage is set for a memorable and madcap weekend in the country. Among the artists featured on the night were Barbara Hamilton, author of the famous portrait of John Paul II, and Basia Zarzycka, designer to the Hollywood stars.  The famous chef Gordon Ramsay donated a signed book and there were donations from many luminaries in the art world including a work from China from Professor Lee curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, photography from the USA from Christofer C Dierdoff and art from Italy contrubted by Cesido Sillo and Nino Spallone among many others.

Present at the event were Italian artist Maria Luisa Sabato and Polish artist Tomasz Milasz, representatives from Arte Laguna and the wonderful opera singer Sara Petegriani who delighted the audience with a performance before and after the event.

Blandine and Magdalena expressed their grattitude at the warm welcome they received from Sig. Matteo Savini, Direttore dell’Istituto Venezia and L’Industrale comm. Ferro della Ferro Murrano: “All involved contributed generously and did their upmost to make sure we had everything we needed.  We have been so lucky with the growing support of artists and businesses at large – it was a magical time.”

The event received the written support of Mayor of the London, Boris Johnson, who wrote to Magdalena and Blandine to wish them well.Press coverage included representatives of TV Polonia and for Italian press by Raffaella Cartledge.  The number of items sold has yet to be confirmed but there are some potential bargains remaining at http://gallery.eclusier.com and/or by contacting the Minerva Art Project directly by email at contact@artminerva.org.

The project continues to grow and plans are underway to take the concept to the doorstep of other European countries soon.  The remaining artworks from the Venice collection along with other important donated works will shortly be on display with the Minerva collection at a permanent exhibition in Devon in cooperation with Gesar children charitable organization , UK.

The presence of Witkacy….
Well well… we have accomplished mission “impossible” – the Witkacy 2009 festival at Westminster University.

So far, from everything I’ve heard from those involved in the event, for some strange reason we are all missing the madness that preoccupied us 24/7!

Personally I am taking my hat off to Kevin for putting together a bunch of such amazing people to work on the project.

Kevin – he was difficult to find but at the same time he managed to be everywhere..

Steve – tried hard (and succeeded!) to keep everyone happy even though, as we all knew, it was very difficult to achive in some cases.

Hard working Marta managed to keep a polite smile on her face all the time.

All of our great actors who had to put up with some rather odd scenography which, btw, was nothing to do with my modern contemporary ideas but a lot to do with budget and health and safety restrictions (well it is an old building..
.).

Still dont really know how Frank become a friend with my bigger enemy “THE SCREEN”
I have to mention my great team of enthusiastic and never complaining artists – mainly Tom and Balint.

I am sure that many world famous theatres would be proud to decorate their walls with the gold phantom masks made by Tom.

Poor Balint never had the opportunity to see the “Mad man and the nun” because he had to stay behind the side stage curtain taking care of sound effects.

There were so many funny moments during the festival.We even had a visit from the ghost at the end..

It was hard work but I think we all miss that.  Personally I miss the crazy atmosphere and everyone who helped to create the maelstrom.
