Celebrating the potatoIn a year which already has seen smokey eruptions, stodgy politicians and economic pulls on the purse strings, artists Magdalena Rutkowska, Melinda McCarthy, Blandine Martin and musician George Lenoudias, decided to lighten the mood by getting back to the ‘root’ of simple pleasure with a fun celebration of the good old beloved spud.21st of May saw the beer garden of the Eagle Ale House in Clapham, transformed into a potato lovers paradise! Inspired by the Van Gogh painting, ‘the Potato Eaters’ they decided to create a rustic setting in which everything revolved around the potato! The Eagle Ale House, run by Simon Clarke has long been a haunt of many a writer, poet, celebrity and artist and its timeless atmosphere provided the perfect setting for such a transformation.A complete potato production, the evening consisted of delicious potato pancakes, with various toppings, potato dumplings, potato salads and potato vodka served in potato cups. As part of the decoration, there was artwork created with potatoes by Magdalena, Melinda and Blandine with potato prints and the evening’s piece-de- resistance a slide show the potato hall of fame portraits (sculpted from potatoes of course!) There were even some potato instruments! (Although the sound of them was not the most musical and became more the summoning horn that food was ready!)Musician George Lenoudias, (author of the international children’s them the Wish Fulfilling Tree, instead turned his hand to creating a ‘Leaning Tower of Potato’ out of potatoes and skewers, with assistance from guests to the evening.Originally the evening was planned as a small event but even the pub’s locals got into the spirit of things, many asking if it could be a regular event or suggesting homage to other vegetables! And it has not stopped there. A Festival with Ghosts (eclusier events at : http://eclusier.com/forum/)Piotr Gulbicki talks to Magdalena Rutkowska: A long day festival with a lot of attractions ending with an exclusive art auction that… Never took place because of the ghosts- said Magdalena Rutkowska- The ghosts that haunt this magnificent place marked their presence… Did the ghosts really appear? So it seems. Tapeley Park has a long and interesting history going back to the times of King Arthur. We can find here terraced lawns, unique, exotic plants and a lake. This has not been a coincidence that made us organize our event there. The owner of the place Hector Christie of Glydenbourne who invited us there was very happy to help the victims of earthquakes in this way. According to the legend, in Tapeley there are not only the contemporary inhabitants but also the ghosts of their ancestors. And that was the day they decided to remind us of them. The day before the event a large part of the carved ceiling in the room where the auction was to take place collapsed.What a misfortune…! Yes, that was disastrous when taking into consideration how long the preparations had been taking place or the fact that the artists who donated their paintings are for example renowned Nino Spalone, Patricio Zona, Dania Zonatto or Lee Don much promoted by world famous art critic Bonito Oliva. Their works are normally not even shown on public exhibitions, or at least, definitely not at the same time or place. However, the collapse of the ceiling did not ruin everything. For the past year now we have been running a virtual gallery, where all the donated works can be viewed and purchased.Was Tapeley not a financial success then? On the contrary, all day long we ran a series of small events during which people could donate funds, we also had proceeds from the sale of the tickets for the event. We had many renowned guests including writers, travellers and actors, there were families with children. People danced to samba but the most exiting was a show with knights who presented short stories on the life of characters from the past of Tapeley. Among them, was Peter Magnolia and his friends who took part in great blockbusters like “Gladiator” or “The Troy”. Instead of the auction, the gathered audience was invited to a room which Dorian Griner, a famous pianist, filled with beautiful sounds of Chopin and Rachmaninov music played on an antique grand-piano. Hector Christie who is the son of the owner of Glydebourne opera house was so impressed that he promised to organize more concerts like that one.This was not the first event for ArtMinerva.Art Minerva which I have run with a French artist Blandine Martin for a year now is constantly developing. We organized similar auctions in Italian Cultural Institute in London and in Abate Zanetti Glass School in Venice. The proceeds were donated for renovation of the monuments destroyed in last year’s earthquake in Abruzzo. This time the donations will also be given to the people of Hawaii. The event in Tapeley was co-organized with Gesar foundation which focuses on helping children with educational and cultural issues. We spoke about a couple other future projects that include my painting called “Wish fulfilling Tree” which became a symbol of international children’s anthem by George Lounidas, a Gesar activist. Copies of that painting can be seen in many places including Lambeth Palace, the seat of men’s choir in Wales, impersonating the people of Wales as good-hearted nation, and also in ministries of education in a couple of African countries. A couple of copies also can be found in Devon.I also heard that together with a famous artist Barbara Kaczmarowska Hamilton you organized a contest for a portrait of Churchill.Yes, that was indeed a true success. That is why we are planning another contest and this time it is for portraits of Fryderyk Chopin. We are also thinking of a painting exhibition that would be devoted to classical music where artists could express in their works the feelings evoked by particular pieces of music. The best works will be displayed in a prestigious place in London, yet we are still working on the details. Another project we are currently working on is The Day of the Polish Potato Pancakes. This event will take place in a pub run by Simon Clark known for defending the rights of pub owners in British parliament. Especially for that night the pub will be turned into a folk hut and everything will be made of potatoes including vodka glasses for Irish potato vodka! There will also be even images of famous people on potatoes and many other attractions. And what is most important- a lot of potato pancakes!

24th of April brought new life to the magnificent Tapeley Mansion, when founders of ongoing art project Art Minerva, Magdalena Rutkowska and Blandine Martin held there latest fundraising event there.The project, was first conceived in April 2009 after the devastating earthquakes of the L’Aquila region which caused so much destruction and heartache… ArtMinerva seeks to inspire art from the loss of art, so that art might renew itself.This was the third in a series of events, the first two being auctions held in London and Venice which saw many artists and community donating their art and services to raise a good amount of money towards rebuilding L’Aquila and were a great success.It seemed the odds were against the project this time however. The volcano stranding many visitors who’d planned to travel from overseas for the event and a problem with the roof over the area planned for the auction itself prevented this part of the programme from going ahead. Yet through this adversity the organizers which include the Gesar org. managed to still create a wonderful and memorable event. George Lenoudias was constantly glued to the phone and the computer during recent months in order to help ArtMinerva with all event preparations. After warm welcome from Jennifer and Brian owners of the Yeoldon hotel the bunch of fundraiser passed the gate of magical Tapeley. Hector Christie kindly waxed collection of his amazing antics for visitors to seeThe day was warm and sunny and saw demonstrations from Honored guest, Portrait artist Barbara Hamilton and various art workshops by Magdalena and Blandine for adults and children alike.There was also a book stall offering a unique opportunity to buy “Winston &Jack”book signed by the Authors and historians Celia &John Lee. A generous donation to help rise funds and accompanied perfectly the exhibition of portraits by artists entering the Churchill portrait prize. Two judges were present for the exhibition and winners have been announced.The grand finale came with an amazing piano concert playing by Dorian Griner.This certainly was a highlight of the day not only due to the masterful playing of Dorian, but also as his playing breathed life into an antique original morrison at the mansion which had not been played at all for over 30 years. In fact it would have been left unplayed even still were it not for a local specialist, the only one in Devon who had the key for such an instrument to be unlocked and let its sound finally be heard again. Almost symbolic of the charities aims of renewal.Overall, the day was a relative success with lots of fun had by all, and even though the auction itself was cancelled, the project still managed to raise some funds which will be distributed to various selected charities

7 -Tapeley press conference brief

On 12 of April ArtMinerva and Gesar foundations held a press conference at Tapeley Park Manor. They announced that there has been a satisfying response to this year’s promotional campaign for 2010, the first of many future annual fundraising shows. The event takes place on Saturday 24 April at Tapeley Park Manor, North Devon. The theme for 2010 is to raise funds for victims of natural and human disasters in conjunction with the promotion of local arts and crafts at the same time. The show will feature a significant involvement of artists, actors, authors and traders .The keynote speakers for the event are Hector Christie, George Leoundias, Magdalena Rutkowska and Blandine Martin.The event will be attended by celebrities and will provide a unique opportunity to promote local traders’ produce as well as contribute to the fund-raising efforts for the humanitarian effort in Haiti and the artistic restoration of L’Aquila in Italy, and to further the reputation of the kindness of the people of Devon as seen through the eyes of the invited international press present on the day.Joan Magnoni, speaking for Tapeley Park Manor, comment: “Registrations for this year’s show are going well and there is a real buzz about the event. When Augustus died in 1930, in an act of revenge on his wife, he willed Tapeley to some distant cousin in Canada. Lady Rosamund fought the will in the law courts, eventually proving that he was of unsound mind when the will was made. She finally won shortly before her own death in 1936.For several years during the Second World War Tapeley was let out to evacuee children from Plymouth, and then as a home for the Invalid Children’s Aid Association, and for a spell as an hotel, before becoming the home of John and Audrey’s daughter, another Rosamund. Her brother, George Christie, took over the running of Glyndebourne and was knighted in 1984.

We are holding a VIP event at Tapely park Bideford on 24th April and would like to invite select local press craft wine and food producers to attend. The event will be in aid of the victims and damages caused by natural disasters and human created conflicts and will include a multi event familly day out culminating in an international art auction in the evening attended by dignitaries and celebrities including Hector Christie Sir George and Lady Christie, Barbara and Ian Hamiltons,Cherie Lunghi,Joan Diamond,Celia and John Lee and many other honorable guests. There is already established a press and media coverage by various networks including the BBC.
